Synchronous Continuous-Motion Platforms

DMW Automation has over 35 years of experience in designing and building synchronous continuous-motion platforms. Depending on the process steps required, our continuous-motion platforms are capable of speeds up to 800 parts per minute. Continuous-motion platforms are generally used when:

  • Speeds are higher than indexing platforms
  • Components are easy to handle, or
  • Process times required per tool location are longer

Although continuous-motion platforms are generally a more costly automation solution than indexing, they offer value by frequently yielding the lowest cost for the products being produced.

Our continuous-motion platforms center around an in-house designed, and manufactured, worm screw drive. A variable speed motor drives one worm screw, or multiple connected worm screws, which then rotate individual turret(s). This approach provides robust and guaranteed synchronization between all turrets in the system and virtually eliminates the need for future adjustments. Various tools on each turret are driven by cams for simple, durable, and repeatable motions. The number of tools on each turret is driven by the process requirements. This approach to automation allows for extended dwell times for tools to perform their tasks (of 1-second or more) while keeping output speeds at their desired levels.

This continuous-motion platform automation concept can lend itself to many different applications. DMW Automation has used continuous-motion to feed and orient components, assemble and process a variety of products, dispense liquids and pastes, use lasers to cut and weld various materials, and test and inspect end products.

DMW Automation will handle every step of a continuous-motion application project from concept to completion. When necessary, we utilize prototyping which allows us to mimic and develop the process steps needed to ensure the final design will meet its required specifications.

In addition, we will integrate 3rd party solutions into our continuous-motion platforms for added capability and performance. For example, it is common practice to add labeling systems and inspection and vision cameras to verify proper assembly, or to add printing systems to apply identification or lot number information.

Examples of equipment DMW Automation has made for these types of lines include:

  • Alkaline and lithium battery assembly for AAAA, AAA, AA, C, and D sizes
  • Pharmaceutical tablet sample pack assembly
  • Medical sample tube assembly and packaging line
  • Patented spray trigger insertion and closure
