Situation
A major medical contract packaging company approached DMW Automation to develop an improved automation solution to assemble, torque, and inspect eye drop tip and cap assemblies.
The customer owned and operated existing automation that did not meet expectations. It had frequent alignment issues, it did not incorporate all necessary quality tests and it lacked the necessary software oversight to track rejects. DMW Automation was asked to provide an improved solution including extra inspection stations.
Action
DMW Automation personnel traveled to the customer facility to evaluate and examine the existing automation machinery and the components that needed to be handled.
Our engineers designed a custom automated machine that not only met the customer’s new mechanical and electrical specifications, but also added new dimensional and air flow testing of the final product.
Our solution was a rotary Indexing machine capable of handling parts at up to 110 parts per minute. Our design handled four parts simultaneously in order to meet the dwell times required by the inspection processes. The final design included visual inspection stations, servomotor-driven torque heads, tip blockage flow testing, and assembly height verification, as well as fully integrated 3rd party feeding systems.
After fabrication and assembly, we conducted Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) with the customer present and received their approval to ship the equipment. We shipped the equipment and installed it on site as a standalone unit.
Results
DMW new automated solution resulted in a 15% increase in line speed, a 25% increase in machine efficiency, and higher quality resulting from the added inspection steps.
