History

DMW Automation was founded in 1959 under the name Weiler Tool and Die. In 1970, after growing our automation business from tool & die to full system capabilities, we branched into the field of automated liquid packaging through the integration of an aseptic liquid filling technology. Over the next 20 years, this business grew significantly and became known as Automatic Liquid Packaging, or ALP. In 1999, with approximately $70M in revenue, ALP was sold to Cardinal Health.  After this sale, we split into two companies with the automation portion of the business becoming the current DMW Automation.

In parallel with the ALP effort, we were also expanding our custom automation business. Since the mid 1970’s and through collaborative efforts with some of the world’s leading battery manufacturers, we became one of the premier suppliers of production equipment for several different battery manufacturers. Our reputation was formed as a result of this success and the fact that our equipment helped increase production from 60 ppm to 300 ppm, and eventually 500 to 600 ppm. Today DMW Automation has over 45 battery lines being utilized around the world with many of them in service for more than 25 years. Today these lines produce an estimated 7.2 billion batteries per year worldwide.

In the 1990s, through patented technological advancements, we developed a proprietary and advanced platform for high-speed labeling applications for both the pharmaceutical and consumer product markets. This technology was utilized in the labeling platforms sold to Sancoa International, which helped propel them towards market leadership. In 2001 the owner of DMW acquired the labeling division of Sancoa and it was renamed Weiler Labeling Systems (WLS). Today after significant growth, WLS has become the clear market leader for Pharmaceutical labeling systems in the US and DMW Automation is the primary supplier of its labeler bases.

Since the 2000 spinoff, DMW Automation has expanded its battery equipment sales by not only continuing to supply existing alkaline customers, but by also attracting new customers building different types of batteries such as Lithium Ion and Hybrid Vehicle Batteries. In parallel we have been successful in attracting new Consumer Products customers for a variety of high-speed applications. Finally DMW has been very active in the Pharmaceutical industry working with 3rd party suppliers to offer a variety of vial coding and inspection solutions, including being the sole source supplier of custom automation for the Lighthouse Instruments VISTA platform. Lighthouse Instruments is the leading provider of non-destructive, optical-based research, at-line and in-line detection systems to the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and contract manufacturing industry.
